Both the Q5 and the Q7 Max Series get very high scores on our bare floor tests, and they're particularly adept at cleaning pet hair. However, they do have some flaws that prevent them from being our top pick. One of them is that the Q5's navigation doesn't feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology which means it's susceptible to getting hung up on shoes and socks and can't navigate rooms with a lot of people efficiently in our tests. It doesn't also have a camera that can see around corners.

It's still a great option, especially if you want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot, and you have a bare-floored home or office. It's also very quiet and can be used when you're at work or school. It doesn't have the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming available in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective in mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes that don't adhere well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle however. If you're required to clean the mopping pad, it can be changed for a wet one in minutes.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

The robot vacuum that mops vacuum and mop combination has a sleek, circular look that looks more like the regular Roomba model than the bulky models from the competitors. It's among our most attractive looking robot vacuums. iRobot's latest flagship model also is its most advanced, with advanced features including Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology as well as future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads).

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that has a perfect 10 in our tests thanks to a blend of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured lighting system and multiple lasers. The only downside is that the X40 still a noisy unit. This could be a problem in mornings before work, or at night when you're trying to fall asleep.

It's also quite expensive however, not as much as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally capable and better looking. If you're willing with a bit more noise and some additional cost this is a powerful two-in-one that will please almost everyone.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with a variety of sophisticated features that let you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning machine like Ecovacs' top-of-the-range X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically emptys the bin of the vacuum and fills up the water tank, and washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot uses LIDAR and structured lighting to create floorplans and identify obstacles. It can navigate more efficiently than its competitors with premium features. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time hazards detection however this was not completely foolproof in our tests, and was sometimes confused with power cords or obstructions.

Its vacuum cleaner has the capacity to suction up to 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to accomplish the task. It also has an attribute called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the vacuum's power and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas in the house based on how dirty those areas tend to be.

For bigger homes, it's worth opting for models with zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean a particular area of your home via the app or voice controls. If you have furniture, a stair mode is also a good robot vacuum option. Also, a recharge and resume function that allows your robot vacuum to take over exactly where it left off is great for busy families.

And it's highly self-sufficient with a full-featured app and a self-emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through a mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or set up an automatic vacuum cleaner and mop spot-clean. You can also use it to prioritize your dirtiest areas for better performance. The app also provides access to many options, including seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.
