Upgrades give you an increase in specific statistics. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item by 3. A random additional substat is also increased with every upgrade.

The upgraded gear typically has a more value in trade as long as it meets low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or a very high stat variance (like eth titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as useful for the latter due to the need to roll a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade gear to a higher level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapon. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to enchantments.

The upgrader is located in all major cities, and can be visited at any time to upgrade your equipment. To keep your gear up-to-date it is recommended that you visit the upgrader each few weeks.

The cost of upgrading will depend on the current item upgrading level of the gear being upgraded however, they will always be cheaper than purchasing new equipment from other sources. For example upgrading a Benthic chest to ilvl 385 will cost 20 recycle points while purchasing the same item from another player will costs 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to level up weapons and tools, armor and other items. They can be purchased by players from NPCs of item upgrader kit upgraders for a variety of currencies. They are also available on random treasure lists. Once an upgrade item is purchased, it can be used on any weapon, tool, or armor with an button, which displays an image of the item at the next upgrade level in the event that the player has enough materials.

The cost of upgrades varies based on the item slot and current item level as well as the level of the weapon, which is more than gloves or bracers, for instance. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with certain upgrades offering discounts to lower the cost of the Flightstones or crests used. Once an item upgrader kit is upgraded to a certain amount and is degraded, it can be sold and returned to the upgrader for a lesser amount of the two currencies.

Many locations have upgraders for their items which include the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade discount and the chance to get a brand new upgrade recipe. In contrast to Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II there is no upgrader for items at the start of Icewind Dale. Instead the NPCs that can be used to upgrade require a variety of means, which is both an improvement and a drawback.

In Season 3, many new features were added to the upgrade system. Once a player has upgraded to a certain item level for an armor slot upgrading other items to the same Item Level Upgrade level, will cost less. This applies even if those items are from an entirely different set of gear.

The discount is available to all accounts. Similarly, the amount of Harbinger Crests required for upgrades is also cut and is not available until players reach certain milestones in their achievements.

Crests

When upgrading gear in WoW, players have a couple of options. Flightstones are an option that is accessible to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specialized and are utilized during specific item level upgrades. Crests are an integral element of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System, which was introduced in version 10.1. They are available in four ranks.

The first thing to remember is that crests are only available for equipment that is of a particular rank. Each rank has distinct upgrade paths. The most basic and straightforward upgrade process costs just 15 crests while the most complex requires as many as 20 crests based on the kind of gear that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through finishing content at the appropriate level, whether that means walking around and doing outdoor activities to get lower-tier gear, raids or dungeons with all difficulties for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses and dungeons to obtain endgame gear. These crests can then be exchanged at an item upgrader NPC, like Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to get the appropriate upgrade pathways and steps.

The new currency system isn't complicated to use, but it does bring some changes to the upgrade process. For instance, when a piece of equipment reaches the highest upgrade level of any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic), it will no longer require Flightstones to be upgraded. This is to allow players to get their equipment up to the highest possible ilvl on all their characters, instead of relying only on seasonal loot.

It's also crucial to choose crests in a wise manner, as they only have one use. For instance, it's a good idea make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests on the top gear you have available and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you plan to make. This is particularly relevant for items like rings and trinkets that occupy multiple slots. The discount for the entire account will only be applicable if all slots on the character are filled with top-quality equipment.
