How to Replace an audi car key case G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are different connector pins, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading about 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. Today, audi keyless go (fulton-hatch-2.technetbloggers.De) i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine with no sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The 4th one remains closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get zero Ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is connected but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I don't know what to do. I believe that I've ruled everything else out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80 100, 200, UrS and replacement audi a4 key RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know both the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing, etc. To accomplish this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause an engine shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire while in gear. It is probable that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. They're cheap and easy to find especially when they're a Bosch unit like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a number of problems within your vehicle. It's a vital component of the Replacement key audi's transmission since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It sends an electrical signal through a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU uses this signal to control the amount of fuel and boost, and also to timigrate. It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms resistance between these two points. This is the same across the audi keys replacement 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 DU, so you might find good ones in wrecking yards.Mercedes-Benz-3D-Star.png
